Refugee Community

Into the Light

Our site is near Linamon-Zamboanga Rd, Aurora, Zamboanga del Sur. The reason we choose this site is that it is close to government facilities, medical facilities, and amenities. We hope these resources can support the refugees to have better-living qualities and to better integrate with the Philippine society.
Also, there is a huge amount of cultivatable area beside this site, so refugees will be able to earn money by farming, which can also provide food for the people living in the refugee camp.

The concept of our design is growing, sustainable and modular. The layout of the architectural complex is centered on the public space, and the dwellings surround the public space. Public Spaces include Muslim churches, schools, and offices. Each family can get land with a fixed amount, and the government will provide basic material for the base of the house. The residents can expand or decorate their house by their need and all the materials for columns and beams will be provided by the government. The beams and columns can form a basic structure of the house that is stable and easy to assemble, and then the residents can choose their own material for the wall and keep building on it when they are satisfied. The basic elements of the house are the square modules and cross interfaces, which provide different room types for different populations of families. In the selection of materials, we used common Philippine building materials, wood, and mortise structure to resist typhoons. The sloped roof is to facilitate drainage.
